After Tobias (Andrew Garfield) runs to the store for a pen when Almut (Florence Pugh) hits him with her car. This violent interaction is how our main characters meet, but not to worry, they get over the insanity of this “meet-cute” rather quickly. In what seems like an unlikely way to fall in love, the audience witnesses the couple grow up, fall in love, and eventually become a family. The audience sees it all: the ups, the downs, the mundane, the highlights, and everything else in between with editing that jumps between different periods in the couple's life.
The editing makes the film’s narrative go through a wavey path just as the couple’s journey reflects. Almut and Tobias have their fair share of serious discussions about sacrifice, desires, and beginning a family. Almut is a serious chef who is decorated and desires to push herself while Tobias wants to be a father. This leads to conversations that put the couple on a bumpy road. It is refreshing to see a female character, however, fight back against the expectations that are set for her. Almut resists tradition throughout the film as she reprimands Tobias for expecting answers about children, fights back against treatment, and continues driving for success in her career despite the obstacles presented.
The acting performances are truly something to marvel at in this film. The film would be entirely different and entirely less entertaining had it not been for the casting of these tremendous actors. They have the range to make you cry as they deliver lines that are not important to the greater plot while creating a romantic monologue that will have your heart fluttering in the next scene. They have it all: sincerity, comedy, romance, and personality. The personality is what carries this film past its repetitive melodramatic elements and meager direction, but instead, Pugh and Garfield give the film a life of its own that surpasses what the film could’ve been with anyone else.
As more about each character’s backstory is revealed, it is hard to not fall in love with Almut and Tobias and it’s even harder not to fall in love with their love for one another. Their cheeky sense of humor, romantic acts of love, and their beautiful personalities bring something for everyone who loves a love story.
