Kunal Asarsa on Sex Tape

Three phrases: Cameron Diaz, sex tape, Comedy. How can that not get you excited?! With the hype and anticipation created by the movie Sex Tape, it was hard to miss this one. In fact, I had friends, who aren't great movie buffs, asking me about the movie and hopeful for an early glimpse. I got to a screening, which was packed with critics and fans alike. So, how was my experience? Let me start with description of what to expect when you hit the theater…
Picture
Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) love to have sex. That is how they fall in love, got married and had two kids. But as a happily married couple with their lives revolving around their two kids, sex takes a back seat. Correction - it gets kicked out of the car. After failing to get some private time, the couple decides to celebrate Annie’s success at selling her blog by having a night to themselves. A few drinks down and with a “Joy of Sex” book to help them, Jay and Annie end up making a THREE HOUR long sex tape while discovering all possible positions of making love and more. Only Jay, who loves his music and his iPads (which he has a habit of giving away to people), ends up sharing the video with everyone who has one of his old ipads. Jay realises his blunder when he receives a text from an unknown number about his sex tape. So he embarks on a mission to retrieve all the iPads and erase the video, following a night of adventures.

Still sounds interesting, yes? But the let down is that this description pretty much sums up the movie. The crazy adventures and endless awkward situations you expect are zeroed in to two scenarios. First mission: Hank, oddball CEO of Piper Bros (who offers to buy Annie’s blog), is the latest recipient of Jay’s iPad and to save her deal, Annie needs to steal the ipad from Hank’s mansion before he sees the sextape. Second mission: the SexTape is now on a porn website, and needs to be deleted, so the couple decides to break in and destroy their servers. So in short, what you get to see in the trailers is all the movie has to offer. Personally, I would have wished for more awkward encounters and crazy fixes, not just two of them which make the movie feel slow and kind of a drag.

But I wouldn't put my cards down on this yet. Sex Tape does have a few laughs and punches to keep you entertained, but only every 20 minutes. The jokes and humour, though lacking continuity, are fun. Highlights include a monologue consisting of an endless list of porn websites (the names are enough to get you laughing) or what Jay calls his private part - “nostra-cock-amus”. Talking about performances, Jason Segel undoubtedly holds the humour part with “puppy face dialogue delivery”. Cameron Diaz, on the other hand, highlights the sex part of Sex Tape. As far as I remember watching Counsellor, she looked like aging was taking a toll on her. But when you see her in this movie, you know why she was apt for the role! Rob Lowe is a surprise package who plays the part of Hank perfectly. Rob Coddry and Ellie Kemper play the part of close friends of Jay and Annie, but for most, it looks like they are underutilised. All the serious talk aside, If you are wondering how dirty does it get, the answer is, just like its name, the movie starts with sex and but the latter (longer) half is all about the tape.

With an interesting concept and a good cast, all the movie misses is a more entertaining fast paced script to hold your attention for the complete runtime. Watch it for the smoldering body of Cameron Diaz (or of Jason Segel, as a matter of fact - they both share equal naked on-screen time).

Disclaimer: This isn’t porn or softcore adult fantasy and the privates of the actors are strategically covered, for most part.
